Reese Witherspoon was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1976 to a father who was a military surgeon and a mother who was a Registered Nurse. She was introduced to entertainment at a very early age and she began modeling at age 7. She appeared in many local television commercials during this time and at age 11 she won first prize at a Ten-State Talent Fair.

She began her acting career at the age of 14 when she appeared in the film The Man in the Moon as a teenage tomboy, which earned her rave reviews. As a result, she began to land roles in bigger films such as Jack the Bear in 1993 and A Far off Place in 1993.

After graduating from high school, Reese Witherspoon put her acting career on hold and majored in English literature at Stanford University. However, this didn’t go as planned when she was offer two major starring roles in feature films. The movies were Fear alongside Mark Wahlburg and Freeway alongside Kiefer Sutherland. These films established her as a Hollywood actress and opened up opportunities for her to star in bigger films. These included Pleasantville, Election and Cruel Intentions.

Her biggest breakthrough role was as Elle Woods in the 2001 comedy Legally Blonde. This film was a huge success and Reese Witherspoon was after considered one of the biggest female actresses on Hollywood. A sequel was made that brought in $15 million, which was 15 times what Witherspoon was paid for the original. This successful franchise propelled her to stardom and she became one of the most highly paid actresses in Hollywood.

She later starred in the role of country singer June Carter, the love interest of Johnny Cash (played by Joaquin Phoenix) in the film Walk the Line. The film was a commercial and critical success and Witherspoon won an Academy Award, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her acting as well as her singing in the film.

Reese Witherspoon also appeared on guest starring roles on a number of television shows including a voice role in animated comedies King of the Hill and The Simpsons and the show Friends.

She was featured four times in People magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful” and she was named one of the best dressed actresses of the year in 2007. She was also called the “Most Likable Female Celebrity” of the year in 2007 by a survey conducted by E-Poll Market Research.

Reese Witherspoon began dating her Cruel Intentions co-star Ryan Philippe during filming and the couple was married in 1999. They had two children afterward, daughter Ava Elizabeth and son Deacon. However, the couple was divorced in 2007. She later went on to marry talent agent Jim Toth. The couple now has a son, Tennessee James Toth, who was born in September of 2012.

Reese Witherspoon currently serves on the board of the Children’s Defense Fund and is an honorary chair of the charitable Avon Foundation. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December of 2010.
