Kelly Ripa is an American talk show host, actress and television producer. She is known for playing the character of Hayley Vaughan on the soap opera All My Children from 1990 to 2002 as well as for being the co-host of the well-known talk show Live! With Kelly and Michael. Kelly Ripa is also famous for her performance as Faith Fairfield on Hope & Faith. The Hollywood Reporter named Kelly Ripa as one of the ‘Most Powerful People in Media’ in 2012.
She grew up in Stratford, New Jersey as the daughter of a labor-union president/bus driver and a homemaker. Since 2009 her father has been the Democratic County Clerk for Camden County. Her younger sister, who writes children’s books, is called Linda. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be in the entertainment business, as she started studying ballet at the age of three and she also learned to play the piano.
When she was in high school, her drama teacher encouraged her to pursue a career in acting. He gave her the lead in the next show and she began to star in several local theatre productions. She was “discovered” as she was performing in the play The Ugly Duckling when she was in her senior year of high school. After attending Camden County College for a while and studying psychology, she dropped out to follow her passion and move to New York City to begin her career as an actress.
She had her very first appearance on national television in 1986 when she became a dancer on the show Dance Party USA. At the time, her ultimate career goal was to be a newscaster. It was not long after that in 1990 when she got her very first major role as Hayley Vaughn on All My Children. She played the “troubled young party girl” character for 12 years until 2002 and later returned in 2010 for two episodes to honor the show’s 40th anniversary.
In 2000, Kelly Ripa replaced Kathie Lee Gifford on the show Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee. When Regis Philbin was trying to figure out who he wanted to be his co-star on the show, he thought back to Kelly Ripa who had been a guest on the show previously. He remembered her bubbly, effervescent and quick-witted personality and thought she would be perfect for the role. He was right and the chemistry, banter and conversations between the two brought a new life to the show. When Regis finally retired from the show at the age of 80, he was replaced by Michael Strahan.
Although she is best known for her television work, she also has many feature films to her credit such as the Miramax movie Marvin’s Room with Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep. Recently she has also been part of the voice cast of the animated movie Fly Me To the Moon.
Kelly Ripa has teamed up with Electrolux in order to raise funds for research to cure Ovarian Cancer. She hosts a fundraiser every summer called ‘Super Saturday’ where she raises money for the cause.
